Friday Inspiration- Dream Big

I am so proud of my great aunt. For years she has had the dream of building a labyrinth. She has visited labyrinths on her travels and became enamored with the idea of creating one in her home town of Charlotte. Shrouded in ancient Greek mythology, most people think of labyrinths as mazes, but the more modern interpretation is more like a contemplative garden. Labyrinths are very beautiful, organic structures and posses a peaceful quality making them a great place for reflection and meditation.

It's not an easy task to get others to see your vision, especially when it is a concept that is new and different. For years she has worked on this project and it is finally coming to fruition. The land that the labyrinth will be built on has been acquired and you can see her pictured with the beautiful artist rendering. She is definitely one of my sheroes. Here's to dreaming big!

I am a fourth-generation kitchen gadget junkie and life-long Girl-Scout. I am also a proud ethnic mommy to a beautiful lil' girl.

How long have you been making dolls, what other things do you make.

I started making dolls when my daughter was born, she's now four. I also make sewing patterns for the more successful projects I've created.

How and when did you start sewing?

My sewing journey began in 2001 when my mom blessed me with a sewing machine for Christmas. My first project was something else! Hot pink fleece pants with a drawstring...phew.

Your blog encompasses family, lots of handmade items, food, crafts. What is you personal philosphy. How do you make time create?

Self-sufficiency is in my genetic makeup. My parents talk about spending summers on their grandparents' farms and I want to recreate that in my daily life. Creativity was almost a devastating discovery for me because I could happily spend all of my time and resources pursing it. The solution I found is to make handmade as quick and easy as possible.
From a business perpective, what are your challenges and successes as an independent artist?

Right now I am very grassroots! I'm just moving beyond the prototype and development stages and am working to have a 20 or so dolls marketed by May. The biggest challenge I faced was the romantic notion that starting a creative business would be all play and no work. The success is realizing that this is rarely the case and still wanting to pursue it.

Studio Love-Part I

In the very near future I will be working on designing my home studio. I am very excited because it will be the first time I'll have my very own space for working that I will have control over the design. Here are the things that are most important:

Lots of storage-I will get some big flat files but also lots of containers for various craft and art supplies.
Bright walls
Work zones-a place for messy work and a computer center
A comfy chair or sofa for naps. I've snagged some photos online that I love for inspiration.

How long have you been a photographer? What sparked your interest in it and how did you get started?What do you enjoy photographing the most?
i have been a photographer for about 7 years and really focused about it for 3....my journaling would indicate that i have been a photographer my entire life. i have an intense interest in the process of birth and midwifery. i began photography with the documentation of birth and pregnancy.

In addition to photography, you're a homeschooling mother? How do you balance that?
i don't. not today...they are entering the system of school next year. i am passing the tourch. i love and honor my time sharing and learning with them, but it is due time for selfishness and they deserve the assets that will follow the blossoming of my career. i am a single mother, and they depend on me enormously!

What inpires you?
right now...loneliness...the tragedy of emotions. i dwell in them until i create something i deem beautiful. i am inspired through imperfection. africa. texture. women. curves. love....

From a business perpective, what are your challenges and successes as an independent artist?
business itself is a challenge..i am really nice and not the best self promoter. paperwork is a mess! but my word is good...and i am livicated creatively. that saves me. i am working on the rest!

You also have a blog. How does blogging inspire your work? How do you interact with your online community?
i have 3 blogs! one on Creative Loafing. blogging is awesome.
i am always amazed that others find connection in what i see and bring forth. it is my way of speaking and expressing...to all that will listen or see. i am thankful for those who do.

Our Carnivorous Terrarium

My sons and I have wanted to make a terrarium for some time now and finally did about two weeks ago. This was such a fun project --that totally didn’t go the way we planned. My vision was to create a beautiful, landscaped masterpiece full of tropical plants but the final results visually were just ok. But what we didn’t accomplish in beauty, we more than made up for in the lessons we learned about plants, how terrariums work and this project was an awesomely fun learning experience. My photos aren't great, but here's the story of how we (accidentally) built a carnivorous terrarium.

The first issue that I had was finding suitable plants. It is cold here and Georgia and most of the plants that work well in a terrarium environment just weren't plentiful at the local nurseries I visited. However, along with some other small plants, I found a cute little Venus Flytrap at Lowe's and bought it on a whim.

We assembled all our supplies. Some of the plants that I bought were just two big to fit in our selected container. We watched several how-to videos on YouTube on terrariums. I realized that there was no ‘right’ way to create one, and everyone had slight variations on their steps and the supplies that they used.

Time to get started. We first poured a layer of pebbles, followed by a layer of sphagnum moss and then a thin layer of activated charcoal. The moss and pebbles help with drainage. The charcoal helps absorb older. Finally, we covered the pebbles, sphagum moss and charcoal with a layer of soil. We found some moss from our yard and we placed it in our terrarium. Then, in went the Flytrap plant.

Ironically the next day my son went on a field trip to a nature preserve, and his very cool teacher gave him a Sundew plant, which we planted that evening. Sundews are also carnivorous.

What we learned. Venus Flytraps are native to N. America only in the Wilmington, North Caroline area. They have redundant trigger mechanism that must be touched twice in succession in order for theplant to close. They thrive on insects and spiders but can go months without ‘eating’ them. The Sundew on the other hand, has sticky tentacles that will trap small insects. There are a variety of species and they can be found throughout N. America and the world.

The closed lid of the Terrarium allows the plants to thrive with minimal watering. We talked a lot about condensation and the water cycle. Because our terrarium is carnivorous, we’ll have to feed the plants occasionally with insects. Other than that, we will just mist the leaves with water once a week or so.

My hat goes off to all the wonderful Etsy sellers making terrariums, my original source of inspiration. I see I have a ways to go in making my terrarium look like a work of art. However, we’ve already started gathering plants and a vase for our next project.

Give Your New Year's Resolutions a 2nd Wind

Studies suggest that most people give up on their New Year's Resolutions within 30 days. You don't have to be like most people. This year can still become your best year. Now is not the time to give up. Writing your book, starting a non-profit, expanding your business, saving money and advancing in your career can still happen.

By February 1st you will be 1/12 of the way toward the end of the year. Do you feel as if you are 1/12th of the way toward reaching your goals? Will the month of January be a reflection of the rest of the year?

Here are a few quick tips to keep you motivated all year-round:

1. Be Gentle With Yourself. There is no need to beat yourself up for not maintaining a weekly or daily goal. Guilt and shame are counter-productive emotions that keep you stuck in a rut.

2. Observe What Did NOT Work. What were some of the distractions that held you back during the first 30 days? Begin to keep a time log on how you are really spending your time.

3. Implement a New Plan of Action. You learned a few great lessons about what to do and not to do. Now is the time to develop a new strategy that will keep you on track.

4. Read a NEW Book. There are hundreds of books about goal setting and motivation. Ask your friends for a few suggestions.

5. Make Your Vision Plain. Place your goals in a picture frame and look at them everyday. Learn how to create a vision board.

6. Get Support. Hire a life coach or get an accountability partner.

7. Be Flexible. Always be open to changing your approach along the way.

Craft for Haiti and more news...

One of my directions for the year has been less computer time and more time for creating art ...and this has been one of those weeks that I have been very busy doing just that. SO although this has been a slow blog week, I do have several blog posts planned for this weekend and next week.

I'll be posting pictures of my first ever terrarium project with how-to's.

Most importantly, with the tragedy in Haiti, I've been reflecting on how fortunate I am and taking more time to enjoy all the things that are important like family, friends and good health. My Vegan Kitchen

I love to cook and my biggest food challenge is converting 'regular' recipes into vegan-friendly dishes. Several people lately have asked me what types of ingredients I use so I thought I'd do a quick post about things that I always keep on hand in my kitchen.

bragg amino acids-Kinda like soy sauce but much lower and sodium and high in amino acid. Basic seasoning for main dishes and great on tofu.

nutritional yeast -Comes in flakes or powder. I love this stuff. it is the base for my delicious vegan gravy as well as a key ingredient in spinach artichoke dip. If you want to make something creamier or cheesier this will do it . Plus high in protein and b vitamins.

egg substitute- I prefer Ener-G Egg Replacer in food recipes and apple sauce in baked goods.

tofu-I don't think soy is great for you, so I try to be conscious of the amount I consume. But tofu is the great vegetarian staple. I freeze the firm variety for dinner dishes and refrigerate cartons that I will use for scrambled tofu in the morning.

coconut milk- Again adds cream and tasty excitement to most dishes. I love to do curried coconut vegetables.

beans and rice-Make a pot on Sunday and you've got two plus nights of eating. Use leftovers to make patties. My favorites are black beans and black-eyed peas.

oils-I use olive and sesame oil the most. Sesame add flavor to almost anything. Add olive oil, sea salt and rosemary to vegetables on a cookie sheet(my favorites are squash, zucchini and onions, roast and get ready for vegetable heaven!

I think they have that great blend of southern charm and good sense-and definitely applies to Quel.

Kia Does Crafty

Since I work at a company that makes craft products, you'd think I craft a lot. Not true. I make stuff, but not really crafts. But last year I was really inspired to do more. Cathie Fillian,one of my favorite crafters, did a series of plates using Mod Podge. I loved the idea. While not as crafty as her, I thought I'd give it a try. For the holidays I presented my parents and in-laws with these decoupaged plates honoring my two grandmothers and my husband's grandmothers. I love the old vintage pictures of them. They are so romantic and I tried to find phrases that fitted their personalities:

Eunice: My dad's mom-I've talked about her. Fisher, homemaker, lovely person.

Pauline: My husband's paternal grandma. Smart as a whip. Still going strong

Edith: Fun-loving and still vibrant.

Cenora: As sweet as they are made.

These were so fun and easy to make. Next time I'll bling them up a bit more. I am looking for more vintage photos and want to try this Mod Podge technique out on jewelry.

SPUNK

After a much needed, 3 week blogcation, I bring to you a much refreshed, happier 2010 version of Kia 3.0.

Like most people, the new year brings a chance to recharge, rethink and review. Evaluating what is working and what isn't can often be a complicated, energizing, frustrating and inspiring, especially when it comes to matters that are personally important to you.

Like many, I've made a few resolutions for 2010, both personal and professional. There are the old standards like getting in shape and getting organized which are revisited every year because they are constant journeys.

But in addition, I wanted to rededicate my work and my work on this blog. My general idea was working around a theme- something like "living a more creative life"--which I'm finding takes work, effort and energy After pondering this for awhile, I was able to sum what my direction for the year in one word -Spunk.

My favorite definition of the word is Informal courage or spirit. I think of it is energetically pursuing your goals and living life; making a stand for the things that are important to you; being brave in the face of tumultuous times and laughing in the face of uncertainty(tee hee- me laughing because almost everything is uncertain these days.).

Recently I have found myself sometimes doing things out of routine, habit orobligation, ie void of passion. Spunk is the word that I'd like to use to describe my approach for the next 12 months. So this year you'll find me spunkily pursuing my work and goals and trying my best to enjoy both life's pleasantries and unpleasantries.

So, I have started the year out with a number of creative projects, a brisk (and short) run, some yoga and a grateful heart.

Here's wishing you a spunky 2010.

Been so busy lately. Trying to wrap 09 and come up with a game plan for next year.Luckily, I am happy to have found some great music to help get me throught these last hectic weeks of the year.

One of my favorites, Res has released a free, that's right FREE album on her site. Its a solid project that I really have been enjoying. Download it. She has another project in the works with Nicole from Nina Sky and also the Idle Worship project with Talib Kweli. Love her.

Sade has a new single., Soldier of Love. The album is in stores in Febuary. Check her sites for details.

Finally, Ms. Badu is releasing New Amerykah PT 2 in February, as well. No details on her site yet, but i know she's having listening now.

Now that is finally 'winter' here in Atlanta (brrr), I thought I'd spend a little time daydreaming about spring again. Kia does not do cold well. Although I do quite enjoy my big boots, thar's about the only thing I like about this time of year. Forward to Mara Hoffman's spring collection. I love this collection (!) and her use of prints that are very sophisticated urban, and also relaxed. There were so many version of African-inspired prints on the runway during fashion week, and I think Mara Hoffman's presented this trend very well. Here's looking to a fun, print-inspired spring. Urban Interiors -So Fresh and so clean

I spent a lot of time at home over Thanksgiving. I had a great time, but felt like I was surrounded by --stuff. So it was so refreshing today to find several interiors that are modern and uncluttered. This is my goal for the new year. To create clean, beautiful white space.

My favorite thing about the room above is although it is white, the room looks comfy and approachable and I love the bright pillows!

I love the fact that the patterned tile floor is the focal point of this bathroom and I love the sink.

Can you explain what a surface designer is for those who may not know?
Surface Designers create the images and/or patterns that compel you buy a product. The range of product applications is huge and includes wallpaper, bedding, stationary, fabric, clothing, office products, and much more. Even your checks with those pretty butterflies were created by a surface designer!

What sparked your interest in art? How did you become involved with surface design?
Art has always been a part of my life in many forms. My father was a photographer, and our home was filled with wonderful images from exotic lands. I became involved with dance and music at a very early age. Self expression through movement and color truly is just innate for me. I became involved with surface design when started designing kidswear prints for Nordstrom's private label. Then I started to think wow how much fun would it be to do gift wrap and wallpaper etc.

You are also a photographer. What types of things do you photograph? How do your paths as a designer and a photographer intersect?
My main focus is travel photography. I really enjoy making the world smaller and showing how we are all the same while also showing the beauty of our difference. I am also really passionate about portraits, hope to explore this soon. The two paths have not really intersected - yet. However, I have some ideas in the cooker for the next year...

What inpires you?
Travel. Travel. Travel. Art has the transcendent power to bind people together at the human level. I just can't get enough. We just visited Croatia and Hungary in the summer, and I can't wait to plan our next trip already!!

From a business perpective, what are your challenges and successes as an independent designer/artist?
Currently I am everything! Artist, accountant, marketer - I do it all! I am hoping to take on a couple assistants in the coming year. The biggest challenge is work/life balance. When you are doing something you love, you want to do it 24hrs a day. I am learning when I am rested and balanced, my work is better. So now I am actually scheduling time to do yoga, and read and workout etc.!

You have an incredible blog and website. How long have you been blogging? How does blogging inspire your or your work?
Thank you! I started my blog when I released the website back in the spring. However, I have really putting tons more energy into it in the past few months. It really is helping me document my point of view - for myself and my audience. It helps me to stay on top of trends and understand who I want to be in the market. In ten years you will be:
Splitting time between Paris, New York and Austin (where my hubby is from). Painting in a wonderful studio. Taking pictures. Making patterns. Making wonderful organic feasts for my family...

What's been up?

Sometimes the timing of things in life is so funny. I spent the end of the summer gearing up for the fall and winter seasons to promote my urban paper and kianicole websites-making updates to the sites, getting in 'promo' mode, coming up with new products-- and then something happened. I got an opportunity-something I have been wanting for years- something I have been planning for but something that timing wise, was unexpected. And because of this, I have had to let a lot of my 'plans' go.

Through September I kept up a facade of productivity, but by October, even that was dwindling.

I haven't been able to stay on my A game, or even my B game.

Why? Well, first of all I have been mentally exhausted. Worse than I can ever remember, barring a pregnancy. My usually crazy multi-tasking brain has been spinning like a broken computer. I haven't been able to process new information and my brain has been zapped. I haven't been full of new ideas or crativity. My immuse sytem has been run down. I haven't really felt like talking to many of my friends, just really kind of felt hibernating. People close to me have asked if I was depressed. Naw, not depressed just kind of in an energy reserve mode.

Second, the time I have had has been devoted to this new project.

So, hopefully soon this crazy period will end. I'm anxious to get my focus back and prepare for 2010. I'm hopeful that really good things are close on the horizon and I'm confident that hopefully, when I emerge from my little hole, I'll be energized and ready to go again with a big, new project to announce. That time of year again. Dry Skin. Ughh. When the weather started changing a few weeks ago here in Atlanta, I immediately had to step up my skin care regiment. Here are my favorites so far for fall.

If you are looking for a heavier moisturizer, Carols Daughter Shea Souffle. can't be beat. The smell is phenomenal, and it has a whipped texture, so it doesn't go on as heavy as typical shea butter.

I've been experiencing dry skin on my face-especially my t-zone, so I tried a heavier night cream. My pick was MAC's Studio Moisture Cream. Within a few days my skin felt much better and less flaky. If I'm not putting on makeup right away, I'll also put on bit in the mornings.

Beauty comes in all colors, shapes sizes, hair textures and such. But the thing that is important is the person inside. This is a picture of my paternal grandmother. She's a beauty, no doubt. But what I remember most about her is trips to the beach and the frequent days during the summers we spent together. This woman could fish with the best of them and cook way better than most. She gave us a lot of love. She didn't dote, but she did care a lot for all her grandkids and children. She was a very modern woman although primarily a home maker. That's beauty. Thanks grandma. Since then, there have been several reissues and the doll has been manufactured again, mostly for adult collectors. I've been an admirer of Kehinde Wiley's work for awhile. His paintings of young black men, mostly from Brooklyn and South Central are amazing. The Columbus Museum of Art, in their2007 exhibition of his portraits concludes. "Kehinde Wiley has gained recent acclaim for his heroic portraits which address the image and status of young African-American men in contemporary culture." I started designing jewelry in 2000 due to the lack of "boho" or untraditional designs in retail stores. I could never find what I was looking for, so I decided to start designing my own jewelry. What inpires you?
I'm definitely inspired by decor, fashion, and traveling. But my daily inspirations come from my everyday life events like family outings, client meetings, world events, social gatherings, etc. My current fall collections (Shanti and Euphoria) were inspired by the need for more peace and happiness in the world today.

What is your vision for your business?

Things I've learned

As I approach another landmark birthday in an few months- yeah, the one half way between 30 and 40, I've been talking with my friends a lot about how your personal style evolves and the things you learn over the years. Yeah, some my mom told me years ago, but I just didn't listen. Others I've just picked up.

All in all, I'm pretty low maintenance. I usually arrive at work with no makeup on. At about 8:30 I may put on some powder and lipstick. I love clothes but I'm not a slave to fashion. I like nice stuff but not really tied up over names. Malls exhaust me. But I do like looking nice, having my own style and having what I need to 'pull it all together' when needed. So here's the short list of things I've learned:

1. At some point, no matter how much you love it. No matter how good it made you feel 5 years ago. It's got to go.
2. Planning your wardrobe purchases seasonally makes shopping less stressful and makes it easier to discern between wants and needs; impulse buys and investment pieces.
4. A bra will make them look better, bigger, perkier or whatever else you are going for.
3. One woman's trash can be another one's treasure. Goodwill can be your BFF, you just gotta go frequently to get the good stuff.
4. Your dry cleaner and alteration shop are gift's from God.
5. Getting your eyebrows done is the best bang for a few bucks. (Still workin' on this one).
6. Closet: Edit Edit Edit.
7. Stalking is only appropriate when it comes to clothes. There is nothing like the thrill of the chase of watching an item until it goes on sale or clearance and then going in for the kill..
8. ..but sometime you've got to bite the bullet and pay full price.
9. It doesn't matter how cute the shoes are if they hurt your feet.
10. 30 is the new 20 and 40 is the new 30 but sometimes you got to dress your age. I'm not saying go old lady or nothing but c'mon.

I signed up for a pottery class, once. It was a free class offered when I was a student at FAMU. The class was at Florida State. I went to the orientation. While I was smitten with the idea of making my own pottery, I guess I realized in order to make something that would even pass for pottery, it was going to take more time/patience/commitment/energy than I had . End of pottery career. But I am absolutely in love with hand-made ceramics and I love with artist Shevon Gant's gorgeous work. I am having having visions of having my friends over and serving organic herbal tea out of one of these gorgeous teapots. Her work is available here .

Urban Paper Girl - Asata Reid

It would be fair to say Asata and I go way back...back to the days when we were 20 somethings running around the set at Florida A and M University. I'll save the old college stories for another day and just say that..my girl can cook. I remember going to her apartment in college and her having a big pot on the stove. "Whatcha makin', "I asked. " She replied, "Homemade fish stock." I mean ... who makes homemade anything in college? My idea of homemade was poppin' open a bag of boil in bag rice..But I digress, without further adieu, my girl, Asata Reid.

Bio:
Chef Asata is a culinary instructor, chef, journalist, mama and world traveler who teaches people how to make foods that fit their lifestyle with her Atlanta-based company Life Chef. Her focus is creating dishes that are healthful, fast, affordable and delicious.

How long have you been a chef? What was your journey like?
I've been a chef for a decade. I've always loved food and in my sophomore year in college I considered transferring to a culinary school, but I went ahead and graduated from Florida A&M University w/ my BA in Journalism. About two years later, I went to the International School of Culinary Arts at the Art Institute, Atlanta for my professional culinary training. Meanwhile I started up the traditional career ladder for chefs in those days working jobs from dishwasher to garde mange, saute, grill and eventually tournade and Sous Chef. I stopped there. I don't think i want to Exec Chef a restaurant until I'm ready to co-own one! LOL. During those years as a restaurant chef I also worked in catering, asa private chef and also was freelance writing.

Eventually I developed a journalistic "beat": food and wellness, and began speaking with a lot of doctors, patients, families of patients and non-traditional and traditional wellness workers. One common theme from all of them in maintaining and rebuilding good health was a healthy diet. And as a chef, I think I have a more intimate understanding of food that the lay person so writing about food in this way was interesting to me.

Still, the idea for Life Chef, wasn't born until one day I walked into a newly opened Walmart in my neighborhood and saw these endless lines of obese parents and obese kids and their shopping carts LADEN with pre-packaged convenience foods, sodas and frozen treats. THAT'S when it occured to me that you can tell people to eat 5-9 servings a day every day of their life, unless you SHOW them how to do it in a way that's cheap, easy, quick and delicious, they're not going to do it. No one has time to cook, much less LEARN something new and laborious. And THAT'S when Life Chef was born. I know how to make healthful, delicious, cheap and easy foods that focus on fresh produce and whole grains and minimize saturated fats and meat products. Life Chef is about making food that fits your lifestyle, because diets don't work, and no matter what your eating habits are like now, there's always room for improvement. If you food fits your lifestyle you're more likely to make healthy choices over the long haul, and lifestyle changes are how life-saving changes are made.

What inpires you?
Food itself inspires me. It's a very sensuous medium that addresses sight, smell, taste, texture. Food is never stagnant because it's a result of the seasons, the preparation, or even unpredictable elements like humidity or drought. Food is like art in that it's perceived differently by everyone: what the cook intends isnt' always what the diner experiences! LOL. But food is also a basic human need, along with shelter and love. It's a way for humans to come together for shared bonding experiences, breaking bread, calling for peace, or just asking "How was your day today?" The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the dining table is the common ground of the family regardless of how many generations are seated there. Whatever is going on in your life, to me, food can make it better, if only for few moments. I get asked about my "style" of cooking and it's really a blend of international inspiration of "soul food" all over the world, foods that mothers have been making for families for centuries, but with the application of information provided by modern scientific research into nutrition, and bit of social concsiousness about sourcing ingredients and supporting local economies by shopping locally. And I always remind people, "I'm from the south, so if it doesn't taste good, it ain't food. I don't care how good it is FOR you." LOL.
What is your vision for your business?
I would love for it to expand, but keep the same essence: teaching people no matter how you eat right now today, that you CAN make good, healthy, wholesome food fit your lifestyle. My goal is to put video short up on the web, land a regular television series that works in the kitchen AND out in the world where food is grown, prepared and purchased by regular folks like us. I see cook books as well, especially because the demand has really grown, and I'd love to keep doing demos and classes -- especially for children and adults concerned with The Big Four: hypertension, diabetes, cancer and obesity.

Still cookin', honey. Til they light the fire under my pyre I'll still be cookin', and heck even then it'll be a barbeque!

I have been a fan of Etsy for some years now. If you aren't familiar, Etsy is the premier marketplace for indie artists and crafters to sell their work. ..It's true. And we all want to see ourselves reflected in the characters we see on TV and in movies, in print and in the products we use daily. I know that there has been some controversy surrounding Disney's newest movie, The Princess and the Frog which debuts the company's first black princess. Controversy can sometimes be good, because it gives the public a voice to have conversations about what their needs and wants are, and hopefully influences and holds responsible companies like Disney. Until I see the movie I will hold off an opinion on the movie's content.

But I am super excited that Carol's Daugther has teamed up with Disney to release special edition products to coincide with the movie release. I'm glad Disney chose a quality African-American owned company like Carol's Daughter. I do think that the newest Disney princess is beautiful and I can't wait to see the movie and sample the products. What do you think?

The last week here in Atlanta has been a bit...cool. Not pull-out-the-coat cool, but I definitely get the feeling that I need to ramp up my wardrobe and plan for an early fall. Plus, I did a massive closet overhaul this spring and let go of a lot of my oldies but goodies. So I'm in need of a bunch of basics. I work at a pretty casual office, but my plan for the fall is to invest in a few good day suits and separates.

My goal is to get a handful of really good separates that coordinate. I want to get a few Michelle O dresses and suit jackets, that have a good cut for everyday. My Polyvore board really helped me stay on track for Spring (I got just about everything I planned --and wasn't overwhelmed in when I sopped 'cause I knew what I was looking for), So I'm trying the same thing for fall. So this is the plan for fall basics. What do you think?

I haven’t really taken a chance to say Hi! I’ve been a bit busy. So someone called out the fact that I haven’t done much in terms of a bio on this site. If you want to read my professional bio, go to www.KiaHowey.com. But here’s the bio for my friends …and you are my friend right?I thought so.

I’m a working entrepremom of two brilliantly fun, smart and loving boys –ages 8 and 2. I’m lucky enough to share my life with my wonderful husband of 9 years (sounds mushy, right?). I work full time as a website communications manager at Plaid Enterprises, a large craft manufacturing company. There are a lot of things about my job that I love including the fact work with wonderfully creative and fun people and love working in the online space. Plus, Plaid makes great products that I promise I will use more when I have time. LOL. I especially love working on social media and community web projects.

So I run two primarily online businesses, http://www.kianicole.com/ , which specializes in personalized gifts, invitations and home décor for kids of all colors. And of course http://www.urbanpaperloft.com/ which I started at the top of this year. So here’s a typical day. Wake up late (but still early for many). Hurry to get dresses; get to work where I may be planning website promotions or something like that. Go to lunch and plan world domination with one of my entreprefriends like Jonetta or Jasi, while running errands. Go back to work. Work. Leave work, pick up boys. Cook, do homework, baths, while planning my evening work. Bedtime and then I work on my business for 15 minutes to a few hours at night. On the weekends we explore Atlanta and rest.Glamorous, right?

I equally love design and the internet business part so basically that’s what I do in my spare time. I also like to read and am a big foodie. I cook a lot. As I am quickly approaching my mid 30s, other things are becoming more important like taking better care of myself and finding little ways to pamper myself.I love hip hop, urban culture, cities, Atlanta (most of the time), arts, fashion and design. I love meeting and learning about inspiring women and entrepreneurs. I love letting people know about the things that make my life more enjoyable, beautiful and fun. A note on beauty reviews. I'm only reviewing products by brands that don't test on animals. I love me some beauty stuff but love the litte critters more. The cool news is that there are plenty of great brands that have made decisions to not do animal testing. Like e.l.f.

Everything isn't about money, but the first thing I have to mention about e.l.f.'s Hypershine Gloss is the price..let's just say it is extremely inexpensive. Inexpensive enough that you can buy not just your favorite color, but one in each color. Inexpensive enough that you can buy one in each color for your office, on-the-go cosmetic bag and a set to leave at home. But better yet, the formulas are great. They go on smooth, have shine thats last for quite a while. Add multiple layers to deepen the color and use a lip liner to modify the shade. Did I mention the price?...

I've known Atlanta artist Zalika for several years and always admired not only her unique style, incredible talent but also her abundance of positive energy.

How long have I been painting? What are your other creative pursuits?
First of all, I've always been a creative person. I use to make doll houses and mini sculptures. I was always drawing or fooling with watercolors. My father was a painter so that may have had something to do with it. For high school, I went to a math and science magnet school that offered no art classes, so I really got into writing poetry and short stories. My Freshman English teacher accused me of plagiarism because she did not believe a 12 year old could write on that level.I reconnected with painting when I was 15 and was enrolled in a summer art program. That is why I decided to major in painting at Howard University. So in addition to painting, I have a thing for writing. As a matter of fact, I did a lot of poetry readings back in the day .

What inspires you?

on a world tour with Mohammad, my man. No seriously, I'd be traveling, I'd have boutiques, a magazine (like Oprah) only it would be for rebels like us. I'd have a school, some really nice coastal homes. I'd have exchange programs between the children of African and the children here (Let them see how similar they really are).

As the fall collections hit stores, I'm excited by all the beautiful prints and colors that I'm seeing. Definitely not the boring browns and plaid's that are typical of cooler weather ensembles, I've spotted an array of new hues for fall including deep plums, reds oranges and vibrant blues hitting stores. I'm especially loving the watercolor prints that seem to be everywhere:

Troy Davis Update

In 1991 Troy Davis was convicted for murder of a Georgia police officer. Davis has insisted on his innoncence -- and most of the witnesses who originally testified against him have recanted their testimony-many stated they were initially coerced into testifying against. Yesterday, after a 15 year fight by his supporters, the Supreme Court has finally mandated a new hearing be held for Davis to allow new evidence to be submitted. This is great news for Davis and his supporters. But his fight isn't over. Be sure to visit Amnesty International for more information and ways you can stull be involved in Davis' fight for justice.

I am a big fan of Tea Tree Oil. It's an all around healer - great anti-bacterial, great for aches and pains and terrific on skin in general. So it's easy to understand why The Body Shop's new Tea Tree line of products are already on my favorites's list. This week I purchased the foaming cleanser and the day lotion. Both have a light, clean scent (Tea Tree has a slightly antiseptic smell that is very natural and unoffensive). The foaming cleanser is very foamy -which I love!It feels soapy going on - but isn't at all. The lotion is light and both really left my skin feeling taunt, clean and cool.

He is immensely talented song writer-he's written for everyone including Jazzy Jeff, Musiq Soulchild and Jill Scott. Not to mention he is a solid vocalist and has a unique style and a huge indie-soul following. I'm excited that has new album is coming out-August 25. The last year has found me growingly disappointed with the few magazine choices available in book stores and newstands. Many of the smaller publications have folded-including some of my favorites, leaving a dwindling variety of options-especially those small art-related magazines or those featuring black women in fashion and style. So I was so happy to discover Arise Magazine on my last trip to Barnes and Nobles this weekend. I snagged a copy of their fourth issue. With the tagline, Africa's Global Style and Culture Magazine, this oversized publication was full of intriguing editorial, global fashion and music information. I was thrilled with the variety diversity of models, quality writing and overall feel of the mag. So check it out and let me know what you think.
